The following entities must obtain a tax identification number from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Corporations (both "C" and "S")

This tax identification number is known as:
Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)
Employer Identification Number (EIN)
Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
The federal tax ID number is a nine digit number (XX-XXXXXXX). Sometimes this ID number is referred to as a "36" number. This is because all federal tax ID numbers in Northern Illinois begin with 36-XXXXXXX. In Wisconsin all federal tax ID numbers begin with 35-XXXXXXX and in Southern Illinois all federal tax ID numbers begin with 37-XXXXXXX.
The federal ID number is obtained by completing Form SS-4.

State of Illinois
The State of Illinois also has a tax identification number. This tax ID number is known as an Illinois Business Tax number or an IBT. The IBT is an eight digit number (XXXX-XXXX).
The following entities must obtain an IBT from the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR)
Corporations (both "C" and "S")
Partnership
Sole Proprietorship (with employees)
The IBT is obtained by completing a Form NUC-1.
The completed, signed and dated Form NUC-1 is mailed to:

The Illinois Department of Employment Security (I.D.E.S.) also requires employers to register with I.D.E.S. and obtain a tax identification number. This registration and tax ID number is in addition to the IBT discussed above.
The I.D.E.S. id number is obtained by filing Form UI-1.
